Greek Bicentennial Zalongo Monument Pendant
Commemorative necklace celebrating 200 years of Modern Greece — 200 years since the outbreak of the Greek Revolution of 1821 and the War of Independence. This symbol is a tribute to the Zalongo Monument, which depicts six female figures hand in hand. The symbol represents the "Dance of Zalongo", a folk song of the brave women the women of the historic village of Souli (modern day Epirus) in Northern Greece. During the Greek war of Independence, they preferred to end their lives by jumping off the mountain rather than become slaves of the Ottoman enemy. According to the legend, they jumped down the precipice one after the other while singing and dancing. The Dance of Zalongo is considered to be a monumental act of bravery and defiance against the Ottoman rulers.
