Dolphins
In ancient Greece, dolphins held a special place in both history and art, symbolizing protection, freedom, and the bond between humans and the sea. They were seen as sacred animals linked to Apollo and Poseidon, often appearing in myths as guides or rescuers of sailors. Dolphins were also associated with Dionysus—famous tales tell of pirates transformed into dolphins after offending the god, forever tied to the waves they once ruled.
Greek art celebrated these creatures across pottery, mosaics, coins, and jewelry, where dolphins danced through waves or swam alongside gods. To the Greeks, they were not just animals of the sea, but divine messengers—symbols of safe passage, joy, and the harmony between man, nature, and the divine.
