What Is a Maltese Cross?

The Maltese cross — also known as the Amalfi cross or the Cross of the Knights Hospitaller — is an eight-pointed cross formed by four arrowhead or V-shaped arms meeting at the center. Its origins trace to the Knights of St. John (the Knights Hospitaller), a medieval Christian military order founded in Jerusalem in the 11th century to care for sick and wounded pilgrims during the Crusades.

The eight points of the Maltese cross meaning are deeply symbolic, representing the eight obligations (or Beatitudes) of the Knights:

  • To live in truth
  • To have faith
  • To repent of sins
  • To give proof of humility
  • To love justice
  • To be merciful
  • To be sincere and wholehearted
  • To endure persecution

These eight virtues made the Knights of Malta cross one of the most morally charged symbols of the medieval world — and one of the most enduring in Western iconography.

History of the Maltese Cross: From the Crusades to Today

The cross takes its name from the island of Malta, where the Knights Hospitaller established their headquarters after being expelled from Rhodes in 1530. Under the rule of the Order of Malta, the eight-pointed cross became the official emblem of the Knights and was worn on their black mantles as a badge of identity and devotion.

The design itself is believed to have originated even earlier, in the maritime republic of Amalfi, Italy — which is why the symbol is also called the Amalfi cross. Amalfitan merchants and crusaders carried the cross to the Holy Land, where it was adopted by the Hospitallers as their defining emblem.

Over the centuries, the Maltese cross spread far beyond its crusading origins. Today it is recognized globally as the symbol of firefighters and first responders — a tribute to the Knights' original mission of protecting and healing those in danger. It also remains a central emblem of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, one of the oldest surviving chivalric orders in the world.

Maltese Cross Design: Symmetry, Strength & Sacred Geometry

The visual power of the eight-pointed cross lies in its perfect symmetry. Each of the four arms flares outward into two sharp points, creating a star-like form that radiates in all directions — a design that conveys both strength and divine radiance. In jewelry, this geometry translates beautifully:

  • Clean, bold lines that photograph and wear exceptionally well
  • A balanced form that sits flat and centered on the chest
  • Ideal as a canvas for gemstone inlays, enamel work, and engraving
  • Equally striking in minimalist polished gold or ornate filigree silver

Our gold Maltese cross pendants and necklaces range from sleek, modern interpretations to richly detailed pieces with hand-set gemstones — all customizable to reflect your personal style or devotion.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Every Maltese cross pendant in our collection is made by master jewelers in Greece, using materials chosen for beauty and longevity:

  • 925 sterling silver — timeless and versatile for everyday wear
  • Two-tone gold and silver — a sophisticated combination with deep roots in Byzantine and Mediterranean jewelry tradition
  • Customizable gemstones — most pieces can be set with your choice of stone, making each cross uniquely yours

The Perfect Gift: Maltese Cross Necklaces for Every Occasion

A Maltese cross necklace is a gift that carries meaning far beyond its beauty. It is ideal for:

  • Baptisms, Confirmations, and First Communions
  • Military service members, firefighters, and first responders
  • History enthusiasts and collectors of medieval and crusader symbolism
  • Greek Orthodox and Catholic faith milestones
  • Graduations, retirements, and milestone anniversaries
  • Anyone drawn to the rich heritage of chivalric and Mediterranean culture
