A Cross With Many Stories
Although the Maltese cross gets it's name from the island of Malta, where medieval knights wore it ss a symbol of strength, protection, and courage, it has a much deeper and varied history.
In Late Antiquity and the Byzantine period, Christian artists developed many variations of the cross. One important version had arms that widened outward toward their ends which was later developed into forms known in heraldry.
No official name for this concept exists from the Byzantine or Bronze age, so we use the most common one available; and that's "Maltese"
