Extensive use of both open and attached filigree adds contrast and pronounces the reflection of light from virtually every surface of the piece. Both in turn are meant to not only capture the viewer's attention, but to hold it almost indefinitely.

They are the same designs - but with opening bales that may accommodate different sized chains.
For stones we offer the "Byzantine 3" (Sapphire, Emerald, and Ruby) ... but we also offer diamonds in some cases, and if you have a special request (a birthstone perhaps) just let us know!

Common Questions About the Byzantine River Crosses
What sizes are available?
Three sizes: large at 1.9 inches tall, medium at 1.4 inches, and small at 1.1 inches. For reference, small is close to the diameter of a US quarter or 2 Euro coin, medium is about the size of a silver dollar coin, and large is roughly the length of a AA battery. All three share the same designs, just with opening bales sized to fit different chain widths.
What stone options are available?
The standard offering is the "Byzantine 3": sapphire, emerald, and ruby. Diamonds are available on select pieces, and custom requests, including birthstones, can be accommodated.
What does "filigree" mean?
Filigree is a metalworking technique where fine wire is twisted and shaped into open, ornamental patterns rather than cast as a solid piece. On these crosses, it's used both as an open, see-through pattern and as attached decorative detail, which is why the surface catches light from so many angles.
Are these crosses solid gold, or gold-plated?
The gold pieces in this collection are 18k gold, and the silver pieces are sterling silver; these are offered as separate metal options rather than combined in one piece, unlike some of our other cross lines.
What chain works best with these crosses?
The first thing you may want to do is decide between gold and silver. This might be a budget decision so thankfully many these crosses can go with both. Take a look at the bale (the circle on top that holds the chain).
If it's gold it may go better with a gold chain and we recommend A Spiga, Kordoni, Theta Forzentina or Venetian chain. Got a silver bale? the perfect choice is the Classic Greek Sterling Silver Chain at 1.4mm. Either way, don't exceed a width of 2.5mm otherwise you'll overpower the chain.
What is the opening bale for?
The opening bale lets the cross accommodate a wider range of chain sizes than a fixed bale would, so you're not limited to one chain width.
