A Shape With History
The Eastern cross originated from Pythagorean geometry and early Christians saw it as a natural continuation of their faith reaching outward in every direction. Gerochristo's Squared, Rounded, and Expanding designs are three ways of carrying that story forward. After the "originals" were created, the Gerochristo's decided on a thicker platform that created a space on the outer edges which were decorated with an Argonaut meander - hence; "Argonaut Crosses"
The Originals
The Gold Border crosses are the "O.G." of the range and are unique in the Gerochristo catalog in that the gold is exposed at the edge of the composition rather than protected by a silver border.
The Popular Choice
The Gerochristo's moved onto a silver format with Zircon and Rhodolite center stones and a little history was made. These quickly became some of the most popular pieces in the catalog and remain near the top to this day
Adding some color
Gerochristo recently added gold plating as options for this design. Typically they are averse to G.P. due to it's lack of long-term durability, but in this case the applied areas are recessed and protected by the silver framing ... and honestly it looks fantastic.
A few notes
The crosses are of standard size, ranging from 1.2 to 1.3 inches in height including the bale. For reference; a U.S. Quarter and a 2 Euro coin are both about 1 inch in diameter.
One thing you'll discover is the tiny garnet at the top of the bale, and a reverse side that's also intricately etched.

Also in a more recent addition, the perforated "Monastiraki" treatment was applied to the next three approaches, with the motif being closest to "Garden Shadows"

Gold plating is an exception for us due to durability, but the treated areas on these crosses is recessed so that brushing up against clothing won't wear it thin. Each piece has a triple coating for maximum endurance but avoid salt or chlorinated water.

When Spiros Gerochristo slid a layer of MoP into place he just added an interior cross and rubies! It's one of the few places in the catalog where gold (plating on these) is displayed on top of a stone

Common Questions About the Argonaut Crosses
What's the difference between the Squared, Rounded, and Expanding Greek Cross?
All three share the same equal-armed Greek cross design; the difference is in how each arm-tip is finished. Squared keeps a clean, angular edge. Rounded curves each tip. Expanding flares outward toward the tip. It's the same underlying shape wearing three different silhouettes.
Is the gold plating on these crosses durable?
Yes, with reasonable care. The plated areas are recessed and protected by the surrounding silver framing, and each piece carries a triple coating for added durability. As with any plated jewelry, avoid salt water and chlorinated water to help it last.
What's the difference between the solid gold and gold-plated versions?
The solid versions combine 18k gold with sterling silver; the plated versions apply gold plating over sterling silver rather than using solid gold throughout. Both share the same design and craftsmanship, so the choice mostly comes down to budget and preference.
What size are the Argonaut crosses?
